Interurban Clinical Club
Founder - Sir William Osler 1905

Sir William Osler
Excerpt from "The Interurban Clinical Club (1905-1994): A Record of Achievement in Clinical Science" by A. McGehee Harvey, M.D.; Sc.D. (Hon.)

"William Osler founded the Interurban Clinical Club in 1905 for the purpose of exchanging ideas and fellowship among medical teachers in some of the leading Eastern medical schools. Since then, twice a year (with a few exceptions during World War II), one and one-half day meetings have been held in rotation first in Baltimore, New York, Boston and Philadelphia. A few years after the organization of the Club, members from New Haven were added. The five to nine active members from each city are chosen from the departments of medicine, pediatrics, neurology and psychiatry at the university medical schools of Johns Hopkins, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Temple, Jefferson, Columbia, Cornell, New York, Yale, Harvard, Tufts, Boston, Einstein, Downstate (Long Island) and from the Rockefeller Institute (later University). Many emeritus members (those members who have reached the age of 55 and those who have moved away from the five cities) join the active members in participating in the meetings."

"Osler recognized that such a club organized for internists would be a way to advance medicine in America in a unique way...Everyone invited received a note as follows: 'It is proposed to start among a few of the younger men in the Eastern cities an Interurban Club on lines somewhat similar to the Society of Clinical Surgery. The number of members will be limited. The objects of the Club will be: (1) to stimulate the study of internal medicine, (2) by mutual intercourse and discussion to improve our methods of work and teaching, (3) to promote the scientific investigation of disease, (4) to increase our knowledge of the methods of work in other clinics than our own. It is proposed to meet twice a year to have demonstrations and discussions but not set papers. The program of each meeting is to be supplied by the men in the city in which the meeting is being held...'"

  • PROCEDURE FOR NOMINATION OF NEW MEMBERS - Candidates for Interurban Clinical Club membership are nominated by Active Members. The nominating member constructs a letter to the INTERURBAN CLINICAL CLUB COUNCIL of approximately 2 pages summarizing professional and personal qualifications of the nominee. Typically such a letter will review the academic and scholarly achievements and scientific contributions of the individual and will provide an assessment of his/her stature in the field. Unique aspects of candidacy should be emphasized. The letter must be signed by four members (three plus nominating members). The updated CV of the nominee should be submitted with the letter. Additional letters of support may be solicited, although these are not required for the nomination. They may, however, be helpful to the Council. The original plus seven copies of the above-mentioned materials should be submitted to the Councilor of the city of the nominee. The Councilor will bring these to the Council meeting. One copy should be sent to the Secretary/Treasurer's office. For consideration at April meetings a nominee must be nominated by March 27 preceding the meeting, and for November meetings a nominee must be nominated by October 22 preceding the meeting. The nominator must fully explain the workings of the Club to the nominee and what the obligations that membership entails.
